"The path to success is paved with lessons from failure. So, did we truly fail, or was it simply a step on the journey to success all along?"
You've just survived the holiday season, where you've consumed enough mince pies and mulled wine to make Santa jealous. Now, you're determined to bounce back and conquer the world! The approach... set goals! Enter the grand tradition of setting New Year's resolutions!
Let's be real, resolutions are like the grown-up version of making promises to yourself after a wild night out. So it probably comes as no surprise that a whopping 80% of them crash and burn before January even wraps up. Yep, 80%! Most folks throw in the towel before January waves goodbye, and are left wondering if their goals were abducted by aliens!
So why do those January goals often crash and burn before the Christmas turkey has gone cold? (or any other month for that matter)! And, how can you save those well-intentioned resolutions and avoid adding them to the ever-growing list of 'broken dreams you never accomplished'?
How do you channel that newfound motivation into goals that become your internal GPS for success and prove to yourself you absolutely have the ability to conquer them!
I'm going to share three mistakes people make that lead to your goals pulling a disappearing act, plus how to avoid them and flip the script to go from goal setting to goal achieving!
Mistake #1: Wanting The Goal
Hold up, isn't that the point? Well, not exactly. Of course, you want your goal; otherwise, it wouldn't be a goal. But hold on a second! When you tell yourself you want something, your unconscious mind thinks, "Cool, the goal is to WANT it, and I do WANT IT, so goal achieved!" Your unconscious mind thinks the goal is in the bag. Your brain gives itself a high-five for a mission accomplished.
Here's how the mind works when it comes to goals - your conscious mind is the goal-setter. You decide what you want and when you want it. Once you've done that, your unconscious mind takes charge, finding ingenious ways to make it happen. It never sleeps, always on the lookout for the endless opportunities that surround you every day. And when those moments arrive, it sends a signal to your conscious mind, bringing them into your awareness.
Wanting is not the goal - the goal is to have and let your mind work out how to get there!
Mistake #2: Should Goals
Ah, the infamous "should" goals – the ones that sneak into our resolutions like uninvited guests. "I should lose weight, join the gym, learn French."
Here's the thing; if your goals don't light a fire under your metaphorical behind, it's a setup for failure. Your goals should be something that excite you, not what society, your friends, or your Great Aunt thinks is best.
Let's face it, when the going gets tough (and trust me, it will), it will be an excuse to give up. I mean, why would you keep going at something that you’re not truly bothered if you achieve or don't?
That being said, if there is something that you desire that you simply don't feel motivated to go and get, coaching is one way to overcome that.
Set goals that make you want to jump out of bed in the morning. Any goal that is worth achieving should also be worth the pursuit to get there.
Mistake #3: Chasing Feelings
Feelings are fantastic, we all have them (some you prefer more than others), and having them as a goal is like chasing the end of a rainbow. You can't weigh happiness on a scale and confidence isn't a universal unit of measurement. Goals require steps, time and measurable progress while feelings are available to tap into instantly.
Instead, ask yourself what you could achieve with more confidence or happiness. Turn those feelings into tangible goals – like landing your dream job or finally taking that dance class you've been eyeing up!
To summarise:
#1: Goals aren't about wanting; they're about achieving.
#2: Your goals should be YOUR goals, not society's hand-me-downs.
#3: Feelings are fabulous, but goals need measurable steps.
Most importantly, remember to embrace the thrill of the goal-setting rollercoaster, hands in the air, screaming with excitement (and maybe a hint of terror). Why? Whether you call them New Years resolutions or goals, they're never really about the destination; they're the wild ride that shapes who you become. So, dream big, and let's turn those resolutions into an unforgettable adventure!
